Lesson #10 - Cabinet Types Prev Next
Cabinets come in three standards types (wall, base and tall), with subtypes in each category.

Wall Cabinets:

Wall cabinets are the cabinets that go above the countertop. Wall cabinets are expressed as their width X height. Standard widths are 9" up to 48" in increments of 3" (i.e. 9", 12", 15" ... 42", 45", 48"). Standard heights are 12" up to 30" in increments of 3" plus 36" and 42". 30" high is the standard height in most kitchens. Wall cabinets are 12" deep unless they go over the refrigerator in which case they would be 24" deep. Wall cabinets less than 24" wide typically have one door and cabinets over 24" wide have two doors. At 24" wide some come with one door, some with two doors. Wall cabinets come in several different types, the most common are listed below:
  • Standard - A cabinet that is a box with door(s)
  • Corner Wall - A cabinet that is designed to go into a corner. Typically corner wall cabinets are 24" in both directions as measured from the corner and have a single door about 18" wide.
  • Blind Corner - A box shaped cabinet that is designed to go into a corner in which one half has a door and the other half is covered by another cabinet.
  • Peninsula - A cabinet that has door(s) on both sides.
  • Refrigerator - A cabinet that is 24" deep, designed to go above the refrigerator
  • Mullion Doors - Doors that are made from wood with different shaped openings in them so that you can see through the doors to the interior of the cabinet. Glass (clear or decorative) is then placed on the door.

Base Cabinets:

Base cabinets are the cabinets that go under the countertop. Base cabinets are expressed as their width only since base cabinets are always 34 1/2" high. Standard widths are 9" up to 48" in increments of 3" (i.e. 9", 12", 15" ... 42", 45", 48"). Base cabinets are always 24" deep. Base cabinets less than 24" wide typically have one door and cabinets over 24" wide have two doors. At 24" wide some come with one door, some with two doors. Base cabinets come in several different types, the most common are listed below:
  • Standard - A cabinet with one or two drawers on the top and one or two doors on the bottom, with a 12" deep shelf in the bottom half
  • Corner Base - A cabinet that is designed to go into a corner. Typically corner base cabinets are 36" in both directions as measured from the corner and have either one door in the front at a 45 degree angle or two doors at a 90 degree angle. Inside the corner base is either just shelves or a lazy suzan unit (2 spinning shelves)
  • Blind Corner - A box shaped cabinet that is designed to go into a corner in which one half has a drawer & door and the other half is covered by another cabinet. Inside the cabinet can either be a 12" shelf, full shelf or one of many different shelf systems designed for blind base cabinets.
  • Peninsula - A cabinet that has door(s) on both sides, but drawer(s) on only one.
